EcoGenR8, a developer of waste treatment and renewable energy supplies providing robust yet innovative solutions to the water and waste sectors in the UK, has received funding to optimise their proprietary pasteurisation process.
The funding has been awarded by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) which is a business-focused organisation dedicated to promoting technology-enabled innovation across the UK and is intended to enable the rapid, effective and sustainable application of technology.
EcoGenR8 have developed an energy optimised pasteurisation system that ensures regulatory compliance whilst maximising net energy production when combined with anaerobic digestion for the biosolids and biowaste industries. The system is designed to balance cost, energy efficiency and digester performance to maximise the end-to-end process performance. The funding will allow EcoGenR8 to further optimise the design and maximise heat transfer and hence overall energy efficiency and provide independent validation of the improved technology design, ensuring it is ready for full-scale market applications.

The Environment Agency (EA) are a public body whose aims are to protect and improve the environment. As part of this role, the EA are responsible for the operation of a number of pumping stations, one of which is Goshall pumping station, located in the Stour marshes in Kent. The EA have made a number of operational improvements at the pumping station, including the installation of a new remote monitoring station. As part of these upgrade works, the pumping station required a new control panel to be designed, built and installed on site.
JR Pridham Services are an EA approved contractor, offering a wide range of services that include electrical engineering, instrumentation and control. Pridhams were requested to design, build, install and commission the new pumping station control panel, the design and build component of which was subsequently awarded to AFECO to deliver on their behalf.
Due to space constraints on site the panel had to be built as two separate units, one housing the pump starter and the other housing the controls. The panels were designed, built and FAT tested to be fully compliant with the EA requirements and delivered within the allocated budget and timeframe.
The services provided by AFECO to this project included:
- Design and build of two Form 4 panels in GRP
- FAT testing
- SAT testing
- CAD drawings (GA’s & schematics)
AFECO is exhibiting at this years 17th European Biosolids and Organic Resources Conference to be held on 19th – 21st November 2012 at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.
The conference, organised by Aqua Enviro, is widely regarded as the leading conference for the biosolids industry in the UK and it well attended by water utilities, design, construction and technology companies.
AFECO is exhibiting jointly with Aquamatix and EcoGenR8 to launch their range of WorX software platforms. AFECO has jointly developed the SludgeworX platform, a cloud based system which enables performance data to be combined with asset data to provide a valuable operational and optimisation tool which can be viewed and controlled from any location. This platform enables our team to assess the performance, capacity, condition and reliability of plant and equipment, minimising operational costs and equipment downtime and maximising overall plant performance.

Basingstoke WwTW is a sewage treatment works with a population equivalent of 100,000 and is owned and operated by Thames Water, the UK’s largest water and sewerage company, serving a population of 14 million across London and the Thames Valley. A number of process improvements have been made at the site by Thames Water, including the installation of a new sludge dewatering facility. As part of this process, the washwater system was upgraded and as a consequence a new washwater feed pump panel was required.
JR Pridham Services are a TW approved contractor, offering a wide range of services that include electrical engineering, instrumentation and control. Pridhams were requested to design, build, install and commission the washwater panel within a 6 week programme. AFECO had previously carried out a site investigation and prepared the project brief on behalf of the Client and due to the rapid turnaround required, AFECO were commissioned by Pridhams to undertake the project on their behalf, the scope of work for which included:
- Design and build of a Form 4 panel in 316 stainless steel
- FAT testing and documentation
- Site installation and commissioning
The panel was designed, built and FAT tested to be fully compliant with Thames Water F15 Package Plant Specifications. The project was delivered successfully, within the specified timeframe and budget.
At a signing ceremony at Glasgow City Chambers on Tuesday 10th July 2012, hosted by Baillie Mohammed Razaq on behalf of Glasgow City Council in the presence of the Dr Ishrat ul-Ibad Khan, Governor of Sindh, UK companies Cook Consulting (UK) Limited and Point Green Limited signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Karachi Port Trust to provide wastewater treatment to areas served by the Trust.
This project targets treatment of 60 million imperial gallons per day of wastewater, with an estimated capital investment to Pakistan of $100 million USD over the period of development.
Commenting on the signing Richard Cook, CEO of Cook Consulting said, “This project will deliver very significant environmental and health benefits to the population of Karachi. Today marks a beginning in the transformation of the Karachi Port Trust area and we now look forward to getting down to work.”
Principle technology provider Point Green, represented by its Managing Director, Andrew Robbins, also commented, “There are very obvious health and environment benefits to this project and I look forward to working in partnership with Karachi Port Trust on this very exciting venture.”
AFECO is working in partnership with Point Green to deliver the technical elements of this project and have signed a back to back MOU to this effect.

EcoGenR8 develops and manages waste treatment and renewable energy supplies in the UK with a primary focus on producing biogas through the anaerobic digestion of organic wastes. In 2011, EcoGenR8 were awarded a contract to develop a portfolio of energy from waste (food waste anaerobic digestion) projects with Thames Water, the UK’s largest water and sewerage company. Thames Water serve a population of 14 million across London and the Thames Valley including an established network of over 30 anaerobic digestion sites.
Anaerobic digestion has been used to treat sewage sludge for many decades. As well as reducing pathogens in sludge, the process produces valuable biogas which is converted to electricity and heat through CHP (combined heat and power) engines, or upgraded to natural gas quality (biomethane) and injected directly into the gas grid.
EcoGenR8 partnered with Howard Tenens, a sustainable logistics company, to develop the Thames Water opportunity, the focus of which is to sweat existing assets and maximise synergies with current operations in order to develop a portfolio of sites that will have the capability to treat food waste and generate a combination of renewable electricity and biomethane. The project incorporates detailed technical and commercial development, including:
- Definition of the market potential
- Development of technical and financial models
- Identification of technology, waste, construction and operational partners
- Planning and permitting applications
- Securing contracts required for financing
AFECO are providing ongoing support to EcoGenR8 in developing the technical aspects of this project and in particular site investigations, technology evaluations and assessment of integration with existing assets.
